A new women’s boat, more crews than ever, racing successes and a new gym…

Hughes Hall Boat Club (HHBC) celebrates good fortune and great wins this year, and looks forward to a brilliant May Bumps.

The amazing efforts of the Club’s mammoth ’24-hour Ergathon’ paid off last month as our women’s side welcomed a brand new boat. It came as a fantastic surprise to the women’s first crew (W1) who weren’t expecting it so soon.

Looking back

Our rowers kicked off the term with Champions Eight’s Head on 14 April – a 1.5k time trial race. Three crews raced (M1, W1 and W2), with both women’s boats coming first in their divisions.

The success continued at Cambridge Spring Regatta, a 1k side-by-side sprint against another boat, with W1 putting their new boat to the test and winning their division! W2 put in a strong performance too making it to the final of their division and taking second place. There were also impressive efforts by M1 and W3.

Hughes Hall Boat Club’s new women’s boat, thanks to the fundraising efforts across our community.

The new boat means the Boat Club can field a third women’s boat at May Bumps; a fantastic achievement for women’s sport at Hughes Hall. Having never raced in Bumps before, W3 had to earn their place by qualifying in the ‘Getting On Race’. They did it! So, for the first time ever, we have a third women’s bat (W3) in Bumps.

The Boat Club also supported our MCR Committee in working with Hughes staff to set up a new and improved gym here at College – an all round exciting time for sport at Hughes Hall!

HHBC President, Eleanor, said: “Wow, what a year. It’s been such a privilege to support the college boat club and our fantastic rowers this season, and thank you to the many students, fellows, staff and alumni who help make all our rowing dreams a reality. With a new Boat, a gym and more crews than ever before likely to compete in the upcoming Bumps, we all have a lot to be proud of.”

Happy Hughes Crews!

We wish all our crews a successful and enjoyable Bumps…keep an eye out for updates on their Instagram: @hugheshallboatclub
