Governing Body Fellow

Jimmy Chan read Engineering at Downing College, Cambridge, where he graduated with First Class Honours and was awarded the Institute of Civil Engineers Prize for Management Studies by the Engineering Department. He then pursued a PhD in Management at the predecessor of Judge Business School, funded by a Cambridge Shell Scholarship.

Following his doctorate, Jimmy left academia to join Mr Allan Gray at Orbis Investments in 1992 as an Investment Analyst. He was appointed a Director in 1997 and was Chief Operating Officer and head of Orbis Investments in the UK from 2002 to 2016. Since retiring from Orbis in 2018, Jimmy has been working at Allan & Gill Gray Foundation to set up and support its philanthropic grant-making programmes.

Jimmy was appointed a By-Fellow of Hughes Hall in April 2018 and a Governing Body Fellow in December 2020. He is also a trustee of Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropy and The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion.

Jimmy supports our Bridge innovation initiative and developed Hughes Hall’s Impact leadership Programme which helps to prepare our research community for life – and impact – beyond the college gates: in other research environments, business, policy-making, and practice.
