Inspiring Postdoc Programme open for applications

Building a career at Hughes Hall

Last year, as part of the Impact Leadership Programme, a small cohort of Hughes Hall researchers took part in the ‘Build your Career’ Postdoc programme.

For participants it really was life-changing; and now it is your chance to be part of the ‘Class of 24’. If you’re an early-career researcher at Hughes and want to be part of a unique programme supporting you in making the best decisions for your next steps, read on!

The five-week course, hosted by professional coach Stephanie Groenke, is reflection based and aims to help individuals reflect on their career, gain clarity on where they are heading, and equip themselves with the soft skills that can help them achieve their goals.

“Through Stephanie’s guided coaching, I could look at my life and decisions from a different perspective. Stephanie encouraged us to take time to reflect and meditate in order to feel connected with our decisions.”

Participants share their experiences

Dr Marta Ferraresso told us: “Through Stephanie’s guided coaching, I could look at my life and decisions from a different perspective. Stephanie encouraged us to take time to reflect and meditate in order to feel connected with our decisions. One aspect which was very important for me was to be able to talk to other people going through similar things and find support in each other. Stephanie encouraged us to write down and think about our challenges and our needs. She made us take time for ourselves. All of these things together and many more made this month so special for me. I recommend everyone, in whichever life stage you are in, to join the programme and take the time to care about yourself. We all need to reconsider our values to have a fulfilled and happy life.”

Dr Jan van der Scheer, Hughes Hall researcher also found the programme valuable: “I have a deep desire for my work to be meaningful for others and the world around us, but don’t always feel like I’m living up to this ideal. The Hughes Hall postdoc career course came at a perfect time…I’ve gained new insights into how I can continue exploring and making new steps to making my life and my work as meaningful as it can be. I recommend this to anyone who is ready to reflect on what’s needed most to reach goals that benefits us and the world around us!”

And, Dr Iwan Roberts, found the programme perfectly timed, and structured, for his own next steps: “This is a crucial time in my career with the end of my current postdoctoral fellowship and the potential to start-up a company from our research. Therefore, this coaching has been a vital resource in helping me take a step back, evaluate what I would really want both on a career and personal level, and build a plan to go forward. The structured programme and tailored support that Stephanie has brought to the course has been fantastic and much more than I had initially expected.”
