Happy at Hughes

Welcome and congratulations to our incoming students!

We are delighted to have you with us and glad you made it – despite the various challenges in getting here. Hughes Hall – and Cambridge – will be your home for the next year, or four. We have been popping up with a camera at various places over the last few days to snap some of our new arrivals, many of whom are recently out of quarantine, as well as new to Hughes.

We would love to see more of your pictures – send us your first impressions, household get-togethers, MCR socials and anything else that sums up your first few days at Hughes, and in Cambridge.

Dara (below, centre) is a UK student doing Natural Sciences (Physical) degree: “My arrival at Hughes was lovely. I’ve never met such a genuinely kind and unique set of people. See you around Hughes soon!”

Dara’s father was delighted that people mistook him for a student too!

Thiago Del Pozzo Zanelato (below, left) said: “Travelling all the way from Brazil and quarantining for 10 days before arriving was tough. However, the support I was given by Hughes before and after has been superb – everyone is really interested about the incoming students’ wellbeing and it was super easy to settle in!”

Thiago (left) is from Brazil and studying for the LLM (Master of Law); Char (right) from Hong Kong is doing an MPhil in Population Health Sciences

Char Leung (above, right) added: “It is a fantastic college! Although it doesn’t have 13th century buildings, it is peculiar in the sense of modern facilities and the mix of people from different backgrounds.”

Max Sichrovsky, a US/Austrian student doing a PhD in Medical Sciences, said: “I have really enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, each with their own unique backgrounds and experiences that have led them to Cambridge.”

Suparna (below, centre) is from India and said of her first few weeks here: “The welcoming atmosphere makes me feel at home and the wonderful social events organised for the Freshers were not only an enriching experience but also helped me connect with people and learn about their diverse cultures. I really look forward to spending a year filled with knowledge and growth at Hughes Hall and nurturing ever-lasting friendships.”

From left to right, students Diya Mehta, Suparna Jain and Nurlana Dunyamaliyeva are all studying for the LLM (Master of Law)

Nurlana (above, right) is from Azerbaijan: “What fascinated me about Hughes Hall was how everyone made me feel at home, even on my first day at the college. As the law is a focus area at the college, I had the chance to make friends with many LLM students worldwide even before the start of the academic term.”

Yufan Wang (left) and Yukun Li (right) are both from China and are studying for MPhils in Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence; and Architecture and Urban Studies, respectively.

Yufan Wang (left) was delighted to be out of quarantine and said: “People at Hughes Hall are friendly, lovely, and warm-hearted. The MCR also held a lot of activities, like a college tours, Cambridge tour and so on. And I love our position – just a few minutes’ walk I can go to Parker’s Piece!”

Dr Anthony Freeling, President, said: “A very warm welcome to the new academic year. As many of you will know, Hughes Hall is a vibrant and supportive community composed of around 900 students, nearly 100 staff, and 250 fellows and senior members. It is fantastic to see increasing numbers of you all in and around College. Everything we are doing this year is focused on rebuilding this community and on doing so respectfully and responsibly after such a challenging 18 months. I hope our students in particular will find the friendship, support and intellectual challenge they seek within and about our ‘walls’”.
