Fireside Chats: Climate Law in Practice

Join the first in our series of monthly fireside chats with a diverse range of legal professionals committed to using their skills to accelerate climate action. In this series, you will have the chance to ask questions and discuss how experienced lawyers are tackling climate change, and how you might do the same in your career.

This series will run the final Thursday of each month and highlight different perspectives of climate law in practice.

Speakers:

Richard Power is a specialist in resolving complex cross-border and domestic disputes through arbitration, litigation, mediation and other forms of ADR. Mr. Power advises on a wide range of commercial, corporate and financial disputes, as well as climate change risk (including greenwashing claims); judicial reviews and regulatory disputes; investor-state disputes including Energy Charter Treaty claims; and general risk management. He has particular experience in the energy sector and chairs Clyde & Co’s Power & Renewables Focus Group.

As well as extensive litigation experience in the High Court and Court of Appeal, Mr. Power has arbitrated disputes under International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), UNCITRAL and the American Arbitration Association’s International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) rules. Having obtained Higher Rights of Audience (advocacy rights) in the English Courts, Mr. Power often conducts his own advocacy.

Mr. Power has acted for a wide range of clients, from oil & gas/energy companies such as Scottish Power, E.ON and RWE Dea (now Ineos), through banks such as The Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group, to multi-national corporate entities such as Bidvest Group. Mr. Power has acted for companies from across the globe, including Russia, Greece, Ukraine, South Africa, Israel, and the USA.

Michael Strauss is a U.S. citizen who joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development as General Counsel from the Washington law firm Harris, Wiltshire and Grannis LLP, where he was a Partner.

Mr. Strauss has extensive commercial and development market experience. He began his career in 2001 in the London and Paris offices of the New York law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. After five years, he joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as Legal Counsel. From the IMF, he went on to serve at World Bank Group’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency as Senior Counsel.

He became a Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for International Finance at the U.S. Treasury Department in 2011 and subsequently spent five years on the Board of the Asian Development Bank in Manila, serving as the U.S. Alternate Executive Director and then as Acting Executive Director.

Mr. Strauss graduated with a Bachelor’s cum laude from Williams College in 1994, a Masters from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in 1999 and a JD from Stanford Law School in 2001.
