Hughes Hall welcomes 17 Senior Members

We are delighted to welcome 17 Senior Members to Hughes Hall in March 2021.

Dr Jimmy Chan

These include Dr Jimmy Chan, MA, PhD (Cantab), Chartered Financial Analyst, as a Governing Body Fellow. Jimmy is a Quantitative Investment Analyst by profession. He joined Orbis Investments in 1992 after completing his PhD. From 1997 to 2018 he served as the Head of Quantitative Research and a Director of Orbis Investment Advisory Limited, and from 2002 to 2016 as Chief Operating Officer in Orbis Investments in the UK. Since retiring from full-time employment in April 2018, he has been working in Allan & Gill Gray Philanthropy setting up its philanthropic initiatives. Jimmy is also a trustee and finance committee member of Faraday Trust.

Jimmy Chan was a Prince Philip Scholar and read Engineering at Downing College, Cambridge. He graduated with First Class Honours and was awarded the Institute of Civil Engineers Prize for Management Studies by the Engineering Department. He then pursued a PhD in Management at the predecessor of Judge Business School, funded by a Cambridge Shell Scholarship.


Ms Katrina Ffrench

Ms Katrina Ffrench is welcomed as an Associate. Katrina became StopWatch’s first chief executive in May 2018. Since joining the organisation Katrina has overseen the publication of several reports: Being Matrixed: (The Over) Policing of Gang Suspects in London, The Colour of Injustice: ‘Race’, Drugs and Law Enforcement and Call it off: are police searching phones illegally?

With an interest in sociology, law, politics and social justice, Katrina matriculated at the University of Cambridge in 2006 and enjoyed her undergraduate years reading Social and Political Sciences. Since graduating Katrina has gained a wealth of political and charitable experience from her work with multiple charities and different local authorities.


Furthermore, we welcome 15 Research Associates from a wide range of academic subjects, pursuing research in diverse fields including solar harvesting, future battery materials, social artificial intelligence, international decision-making, marine conservation, placental function, and digital technology in education.
