Boat Club

Supporting Hughes Hall Boat Club

Hughes Hall Boat Club has been at the heart of the college community for many years, providing students of all abilities and experience levels the opportunity to row on the iconic river Cam.

Having risen rapidly through the Cambridge College rowing ranks since its inception in 1989 to become one of the most successful clubs on the river, Hughes crews frequently take home the prestigious accolade of Blades in the annual Lent and May Bumps Regatta. The club has continued to earn significant success over the last few years, with the 2022 May Bumps seeing the college’s best ever results in the flagship competition.

The club is also a hub of social activity, hosting socials throughout the academic year and forming the backdrop to many hundreds of friendships formed in Cambridge.

We hope that former members will continue to encourage the successes of the HHBC by ensuring that financial struggles don’t limit the competitive edge of its rowers.

Here are just some of the ways that your gift could help support our student rowers:

  • Paying for high-quality coaching sessions
  • Buying new equipment such as blades, boats and indoor rowing machines
  • Covering the cost of travel to and from competitions outside of Cambridge
  • Reducing membership fees for students

You can make a donation from anywhere in the world via our donation page.

Women’s Rowing Appeal

Hughes Hall Boat Club is going from strength to strength, with more women than ever before taking part in rowing. Last year saw four women’s crews training in Lent Term and, for the first time in Hughes Hall history, two women’s boats competing in the May Bumps.

This development is exciting for both the college and the club, but it is imperative that the correct equipment is available to allow the increasing number of female rowers to participate, compete and excel on the river.

Sadly, one of the college’s two women’s boats urgently needs replacing. Without a new eight boat, our female rowers face having fewer rowing opportunities over the coming months than their male counterparts.

HHBC has identified a new, high-quality Stampfli boat that would allow our women’s crews to continue to train and race without hindrance. Although some funds are already available thanks to the sale of another boat, the support of alumni and friends is needed to help purchase a new, much-needed women’s eight.

Headline Sponsor
As our headline sponsor, you will be making a lasting and significant difference to women’s rowing at Hughes Hall. Sponsorship at this level would allow us to acquire a brand-new boat, as well as the additional equipment necessary to cater for our growing number of female rowers.

Please get in touch on development@hughes.cam.ac.uk for more information.

Sponsor a seat
Sponsoring a seat is the perfect way to contribute to our appeal and leave a lasting mark on the new women’s boat for years to come. As well as support form individuals, we’d also welcome groups who wish to sponsor a seat together or businesses who wish to make a vital contribution to the future of women’s rowing at Hughes Hall.

A name, message, or quote of your choice (subject to approval), will be permanently marked by the seat of your choosing. Availability is limited to nine, including the cox’s seat.

Contribute to our new boat fund
You can make a general contribution to the new women’s boat fund here. Gifts of any size are very gratefully received.

Thank you for believing in our student rowers and supporting women’s rowing at Hughes Hall.

“A new boat will allow us to continue to grow the women’s side of the club, building on the success that the men’s side has had in recent years. Our women’s side currently makes up 66% of our club and so it is essential that we invest properly to ensure that the women at Hughes Hall have the opportunity to row”

– Eleanor Minogue, HHBC President 2022/23

Over 1,500 Hughes Hall rowers and coxes have competed for the Blue and HHBC since 1979
