Dr Sargent is a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge. Her research has historically focused on the human sex chromosomes, but a secondment to PIC (Pig Improvement Company) in the early 2000s led to broader interests, including pig genomics and host-pathogen interactions. Along with colleagues at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre, Dr Sargent worked on characterising the porcine X and Y as part of the international pig genome project. Participation in the Cambridge-Africa programme has generated further collaborations with colleagues in Ghana, investigating the genetics of local African pig breeds.

When possible, an escape to the west of Scotland or north Wales allows some time for hill walking.
