Richard Wakeford MA CPsychol FRCPE FRCGP(Hon) FHEA

Life Fellow

Richard Wakeford is a psychologist whose main activities are focussed on the high-stakes assessment of professional competence, in particular that of lawyers, doctors, dentists and health-related professionals (including vets of various specialties).

He has recently supported Kaplan Inc in designing and quality assuring assessments for lawyers — initially, foreign-trained ones wanting to gain a qualification to practise in England and Wales (the qualified lawyers transfer scheme or QLTS), and now the innovative national Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) for which Kaplan have been selected as the assessment provider.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when circumstances prevented many patient-based examinations from running, he helped the RCGP develop and deliver (within three months) an emergency examination of GP trainees’ consultation skills: this has enabled 2,000+ GPs to enter the workforce who would otherwise have been unable to do so.

In the past, he supported the Clinical School in relation to assuring the quality and fairness of its examinations and until 2012, co-directed the Huntingdon GP specialist training scheme.

Richard is now acting as psychometric support for the devising and delivery of a qualifying examination for practice in the Maldives Bar.
