Quondam Fellow

Mark Bale is Deputy Director of Health Science & Bioethics at the Department of Health and Head of Science Partnerships at Genomics England. He is responsible for several emerging areas of science and their ethical, legal and policy implications. The current emphasis is on genomics (particularly the 100,000 Genomes Project) and emerging therapies such as regenerative medicine. He is Head of Profession for Scientists and Engineers and Deputy to the Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Chris Witty. This includes responsibility for coordinating scientific and technical input on horizon-scanning and cross-cutting development of scientific advice. Since December 2014 he has been the Chair of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Bioethics.
