James has worked at the Faculty of Education since 2004. He currently leads the secondary physics PGCE course. In addition, he teaches on the secondary biology, chemistry and primary PGCE courses.  James is also member of the Physics Education Research Group at the University of Uppsala, Sweden.  His academic research focusses primarily on the development of beginning and early career teachers, with particular consideration for the subject-specific aspects of being a physics teacher. He has a long-standing relationship with and commitment to the Ogden Trust and is their national lead for initial teacher education and early career teacher development.

James has written many books and resources for teachers, teacher educators and students but thinks his book How to Catapult a Castle has the best title. In 2020 he was the winner of the best lecturer award in the University-wide student-led teaching awards.
