COVID-19 Emergency Appeal – Update

After its launch in May, the college’s COVID-19 Emergency Appeal has seen the Hughes Hall community pull together and show an indomitable spirit in the face of adversity.

The campaign started with an incredibly generous donation of £100,000 from an alumnus (2001 Part 111 Mathematics) who wished to help mitigate the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students, as well as inspire the Hughes Hall community to come together and help do the same.

It’s fair to say that Hughesians around the world have absolutely taken up the challenge.

Donations have ranged in value from ten pounds to thousands of pounds and the campaign has received gifts from over 115 alumni, senior members and supporters – a phenomenal response that reflects the care that many have, not just for current students, but also for future cohorts who will also undoubtedly be affected by the current coronavirus crisis.

The second stage of the campaign has now begun in earnest, with ambassadors for the campaign, including many former MCR Presidents, reaching out to their peers and asking them to lend their to support.

Taylor Harris (2014, BA aff. Law), member of the MCR Committee 2014/15 and champion of the campaign, has appealed for the support of other alumni, saying:

“The Hughes Hall community is a unique fabric of global individuals engaging in a variety of academic pursuits. We as alumni should take pride and responsibility to help current and future students experience the wonderful environment that the College has to offer, which you and I were fortunate to be able to previously experience.”
