Chinese Music on a Summer's Evening

Four enterprising and very talented Hughes students got together to perform a wide repertoire of Chinese songs and instrumental pieces to a large and appreciative August audience.

Since the concert fell on 13 August, just a day after the death of  former College President Margaret Wileman, in whose honour the college Music Society is named, the students requested that the concert should be a tribute to her. They dedicated one piece in particular to her memory, ‘The Street Where the Wind Resides’.

Violinist Cangxiong Chen recounted, “I remember this concert came out of our chat after your farewell concert in June. We all felt that it would be nice to present what we think as some of the best Chinese (folk) music in the 20th century, since they were rarely performed in Cambridge. We knew that our college has always been very supportive of students’ concert and we’d better act quick since our soprano- Jennie Li Zhen would be leaving Cambridge soon.”
