A delightful visit from descendants of our first Principal, Elizabeth Phillips Hughes

We were delighted this week to welcome to the college the great nephew and niece of our founder Elizabeth Phillips Hughes.

David Price-Hughes and his sister Diana O’Flynn, who, at the age of three, was the last member of the family to meet with Miss Hughes, were joined by David’s wife Christine Vinnicombe for a tour of the college and then presented our Development Director, Richard Berg Rust, with several wonderful Japanese prints from Elizabeth Hughes’ collection.

The welcomed guests were taken on a grand tour which showed them around the college, followed by a brief overview of our future plans, including our Gresham Road development which will introduce 85 new student rooms and a resident student’s study space.

It was inspiring to renew links with the family of our founder, and to have a sense of their enthusiasm for new developments at the College including the Gresham Road accommodation building, now rising quickly on the other side of Fenner’s. A long way from our modest beginnings at Newnham Croft in 1885 and a tribute to the power of Miss Hughes’ vision.
