Beyond Academia: a seminar for students and early career researchers

The Hughes Hall Postdoctoral Research Group presents the seminar Beyond Academia aimed at students and early career researchers.

According to the Royal Society over 95% of STEM PhD holders in the UK will leave academia due to the lack of permanent research positions.

The academic landscape has changed dramatically over the last years. More PhDs than ever are awarded and the number of permanent research posts have not increased proportionally. Furthermore, the increasing pressure to publish that students and post-docs face mean that they do not have sufficient time or opportunity to explore alternative routes to academia.

This seminar is designed to allow students and early career researchers to reflect on alternatives to academia by addressing the questions of
* What is beyond academia? and
* How can I bridge the gap between the academic and external worlds?

Three guest speakers that have recently transited from academia into diverse non-academic roles will discuss their experiences and the rewards and difficulties during the process. They will tell us their stories in short and accessible formats. At the end of the seminar, we will have a round table discussion where the attendees will be able to pose questions to the panel about non-academic careers. The event will end with a free buffet and a chance to network.

Speakers
* Andreas Betz, Technology Developer at Sentec Ltd.
* Sarra Achouri, CMO of CamBioScience Ltd.
* Elizabeth Zuccala, Senior Editor, The Lancet.
