General Purposes

Flexible support for where the need is greatest

Hughes Hall’s General Purposes fund is a valuable source of unrestricted funding to support key priorities across the college. As we strive to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on our community, gifts to this fund are ensuring that Hughes Hall is a safe and welcoming place for our students to embark on their studies. Staff have gone to extraordinary lengths to provide spaces for students to eat, work and socialise safely, setting up our fantastic new Suzanne Ziegler Garden Room Café. Seniors have rallied through the Hughesians Together scheme to connect with students virtually and to foster a caring and sociable network where our community can support each other even in periods of physical isolation.

Case study: A Covid secure Library

The Edwin Leong Library is a much-loved learning space with comfortable desks and chairs for long hours of study, calming views of the garden, and friendly librarians on hand to help find sought after books.

As a second year PhD student I have always found the Edwin Leong Library to be the best place to study in Cambridge… I particularly appreciate the hard work the team has done to make the Library the last to close during the March lockdown and one of the first to reopen in July, after making all the necessary changes.

Keeping the Library open for students through the pandemic has been one of the foremost priorities for the college, ensuring access to crucial resources for research and study. Custom-built perspex screens have been installed, new study sessions and library tours made available online, a ‘click and collect’ service introduced for borrowing books, and a booking system devised to carefully manage the Library’s capacity. Long term, the Library team are seeking to invest in additional copies of core textbooks that are in frequent demand from students, to expand the Library’s digital provision, and to grow it’s collection of books dedicated to student wellbeing.
