This Thursday, 15th May, Hughes Fellow Dr Robyn Veal will present a talk as part of the lecture series Crossing the Boundaries, organised by the Postdocs Of Cambridge society (PdOC).
Dr Veal will be discussing the scientific techniques of charcoal analysis, and the use of these techniques to gain greater insight into how the ancients utilised wood to fuel their civilisations. With the depletion of the world’s fossil fuels, a future return to wood has become a major consideration, and understanding the ancients’ treatment of wood could teach us invaluable lessons for the future.
This talk builds on a number of recent talks which Dr Veal has been giving across the globe, representing the name of Hughes Hall. In April, Dr Veal presented a talk to Hughes alumni at the Rockefeller Center, New York, while touring America upon invitation to speak at a series of public seminars and workshops at Brown University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton University.
