Still in its pilot year, the Hughes Hall Centre for Climate Change Engagement was established to increase climate change awareness on the boards of private companies and to help them respond. Today, Chapter Zero, supported and hosted by the Centre, launches in the UK as part of the World Economic Forum Climate Governance Initiative.
Chapter Zero will establish a Network of Members – Chairs, Committee Chairs and Non-Executive Directors – who are interested in accessing high quality academic and other research and practical tools on climate change, as well as sharing the best practice board-level response. This non-executive director community will be supported to develop their knowledge of the implications of climate change, better understand how it is likely to affect their companies and to bring an informed contribution to the board room helping shape the corporate response.
In addition to Hughes Hall, this important board initiative is being supported by leading industry bodies, the CBI, ICAEW, Carbon Trust and Royal Institution, as well as professional services firms. Julie Baddeley, Director of the Hughes Hall Centre for Climate Change Engagement and Chair of Chapter Zero said “The establishment of Chapter Zero would not have been possible without the support of Hughes Hall. As part of the Bridge, the Centre for Climate Change Engagement will bring leading research on climate change to board members right across the UK. This is an important step in addressing what is probably the most important challenge for society today, and forms part of an ambitious climate change agenda for the Centre which we will be delighted to share when the Centre itself formally launches later this year.”
