During three decades, scientists from all over the world have been searching for the volcano that caused the “mystery eruption”, only recorded by its sulphate signature in polar ice sheets, dated CE 1258. This eruption is suspected to have triggered major climate perturbations in the Northern hemisphere during the 13th century. In 2012, a group of scientists collected pieces of evidence all over the world to find the source of the mystery eruption. Dr Celine Vidal, volcanologist in the Department of Geography and Research Associate at Hughes Hall will present the film on the discovery of the eruption of the Samalas volcano in Indonesia, which was the subject of her PhD thesis. The film will be followed by a Q&A session.
