Supporting Hughes Hall
The continued support of our alumni and friends has helped the College to grow and develop, enhancing academic and social facilities around the College and supporting our students.
Every gift, regardless of size, is important. Collectively the support of our alumni and friends helps us to achieve our goals and has a real impact on College life.
Your support can have a real impact. If you are minded to make a gift or have any queries we would be happy to hear from you.
125th Anniversary Scholarships and Bursaries Appeal
“We all aspire to do great things. What makes the impossible more possible is the support we receive along the way. The Hughes Hall scholarship has essentially made possible for me what would have otherwise been beyond reach. Wherever I may go from here, I will always be proud to be part of the Hughes Hall community.”
Hughes Hall Scholarship recipient
The College is committed to maintaining and extending the ability of very bright students to have access to a Cambridge education and the life changing development that it can bring about. Our aim is to raise our new Scholarships and Bursary capital fund to £1.5 million, which will provide much needed support for our students.
Over the past few years, the College has set aside a portion of its annual expenditure to fund a number of ‘Hughes Hall awards’ which cover the College Fee and University Composition Fee. We need to invest for the future and protect ourselves (and the financial support we can offer students) against economic turbulence and external risks to funding. We would like to create more bursaries and scholarships that can be used for a range of subjects and degrees, so that we can support students most in need.
Estates
Through prudent financial management and some generous donations, the College has managed to fund a number of developments on the main site in recent years (Fenner’s Building, Learning Resources Centre and Wollaston Lodges refurbishment). However, there is still a need for more student accommodation, improvements to the Archive and Rare Books room in the Library and refurbishment of existing buildings. One of our longer term projects is the construction of a Porters Lodge which would provide 24-hour security and assistance to students and external guests.
Academic Endeavour
By providing workshops and seminars, attracting external academic speakers and guests, and supporting interdisciplinary research, the College will create a powerful academic brand and add value to the academic experience of students in Cambridge. Networking and career opportunities are also of great importance to the students in College. We would like to enhance our facilities for young academics such as Post-Doctoral Research Associates and Visiting Fellows/ Scholars.
Clubs & Societies
Extra-curricular activities enrich the College community and complement the academic work of the students, either by providing a forum to discuss their research (eg the student-led Hat Club seminar series) or by offering rest and relaxation away from the library. A number of our sporting clubs have achieved great success on limited budgets (the Boat Club, the Table Tennis Club and the Badminton Club, to name a few) provide wonderful opportunities for students to get involved in a wide variety of sports.
